It's beginning to look a lot like something
Hey, Hey, Hey all you ruffians and rascals, dames, and dudes.
Okay maybe I should dial that back a little bit. I was watching Defiance and one of my favorite characters is a DJ or something, spinning "old world" tunes. Who doesn't love music from the 80s and 90s? Classics.
It's almost Christmas time and I want to talk emotional labor. Sounds awful right?
Around this time of year some of yous become assholes and forget your manners. So let the sociologist in me explain why this is a bad thing for those you inflict your attitude on.
Emotional labor is the management of feelings. The ones that come from the work they do, whether it's a police officer or a service worker, such as a waitress. But how you treat others explains a lot about you.
People are doing their jobs, some of them are only seasonal workers, temps. They are there to try and help you in this time of need, shopping for your loved ones, give them a break!!!!!
The police, EMTs, fire fighters, they are just doing their job. They get shit every day, even when trying to save a life. Do you really think you could do their job? If you do, Metro is hiring.
It's not easy to go on shift and lose someone, but it happens. It's emotional. They are not robots, they are human beings that lost a life today or yesterday, but they have to shove those feelings down. Give them a break.
Most jobs can be considered emotional labor. Again, you don't want to go to a restaurant and have the waitress taking out a bad day on you. She tries to give you her best, so GIVE HER A BREAK.
Remember the way you treat people has consequences. Bullying is real, and people have tried to hurt themselves over it. Try the Golden Rule.
If you don't want to be treated like shit, don't treat others that way.
To those that serve, in some form or other, I raise a beer to you. Keep on keeping on.
